Birthday season

Once August hits we are in full birthday mode around here -- consuming servings of cake and ice cream at least every other week, or so it seems.

Happy birthday honey!

On Aug. 23, Derek celebrated his 31st birthday :)

Not being one to make a big deal of himself, he didn't want a party or any fuss. He allowed Lydia to pick the activity: a swimming party with the family. We fired up the grill and had his parents and grandma over for dinner after enjoying the pool.

Lydia liked helping Daddy open his gifts.

That weekend we were lucky enough to get a bonus visit from Kevin and Leslie and their family. Sadly, Leslie's grandmother had passed away in Salt Lake, but that meant they were driving through Southern Utah and stopped in Cedar for a couple of nights. It was wonderful to see them!
Because Leslie's birthday is just a few days after Derek's my mom had a special cake for the two of them.

Connor and Reagan -- 2 weeks apart. Love these two!!!

My turn

Then it was my turn for  birthday.
The Saturday before my parents came down and watched the kids while Derek and I went to dinner and a movie. A meal eaten in peace? I'll take it!

My parents came down to watch the kids while Derek and I went to dinner and a movie. While we were gone, Lydia and my mom made my birthday cake.
Then Derek had arranged to have my parents and my grandma come to our house for dinner the Sunday prior. He was so sweet -- trying to make sure I didn't have to do anything for the meal. He even offered to whip up some homemade rolls, but since he's never actually made homemade rolls (I have no doubt he could if he tried) I thought it would be easiest to go with Rhodes. It was a very thoughtful gesture.

On my actual birthday I felt spoiled at work with treats from a couple of my coworkers and flowers from my inlaws. After work Derek called to tell me he was picking up dinner and we celebrated a quiet little gathering with just us and the kids.

Gifts at work -- so fun!
Apparently I am getting old as this kind of quiet gathering was just what I wanted. Even though I was totally excited about the old movies Derek gave me as a gift ("South Pacific," "Sound of Music," "Fiddler on the Roof") and the ones my mom had given me ("Oklahoma" and "The King and I") I was too tired to even watch one that night.
I'm lame. But sleep is such a great gift.

It was a great birthday!

C is for Connor... and cute... and...

Connor at 7 months old
There are so many things to say about my darling little boy. He is 9 months old these days and I can't believe how quickly the time is flying by. If possible, it is going even more quickly than it did with Lydia. Possibly because life is busier with two kids. Maybe because I'm older. Probably both.

Crawling

Connor is everywhere lately. He started officially crawling on July 23. Daddy saw the first official movements forward and I looked up from where I was in the kitchen in time to see the end of those first little crawling motions. Now it's all I can do to keep up with him. I love to watch his little hands padding forward as he giggles -- a sound he makes especially when he is heading toward the blinds, the office, the pantry or any number of places we would rather he not go.

Chewing
We've been adding more and more table foods into his diet as he's gotten older. I had forgotten what a messy stage this is! It's so fun to see how excited he gets feeding himself though. Some of his favorites are black beans, pinto beans and kidney beans and bananas but he's a pretty good eater with most things.

No need to limit the chewing to just food, right?
Here he is in the conductor hat from Lydia's birthday party.

Clean
We stopped using the baby bathtub earlier this summer and moved him right into the big tub so we could bathe both kids at the same time. When he gets a solo bath though, we still prefer the sink -- it's so much easier having him at our standing level rather than bending over the bathtub for long periods of time.

Calm

So sweet!

Chilling

He's been pulling himself up to standing in his crib since July 27. He's also been doing it on various pieces of furniture. I fear walking is in our near future.

Trying out the shopping cart with no bucket seat. He's a little small still, but it made the most recent Wal-Mart trip a little more entertaining.

Lots of blanket play time at our house. I love watching him manipulate his toys and explore new things.

He loves kicking these fish at Grandma Larson's house.

 Crying

The necessary evil in parenting -- the time when you finally let your child cry it out in the night -- is a step I've put off far too long with this little guy. I could tell he was ready to do it in early June, but because we had travel plans and so many schedule interruptions this summer it didn't make sense go through the heartache only to undo all our efforts on vacation.
So, we waited.
Finally on Aug. 10 I determined this would be the night. At 9 months old these sporadic but increasingly frequent mid-night feeding sessions were getting ridiculous. He is old enough to sleep through the night and I knew I was the basic problem in the equation. I guess I'm just a big softie.
At 11:57 p.m. he woke up like clockwork. He'd been requesting a feeding at midnight for several days and like a fool I had been giving in. That night I decided it was time. He'd had a good feeding before bed and good meals all day so I knew he wasn't really hungry, just looking for comfort or a snack.
I waited until 12:07 a.m. Aug. 11 to go in and assess the situation. I checked his diaper, made sure he had an adequate supply of binkies in his bed and gave him a big hug.
Then I left.
He screamed.
Surprisingly it was not as terrible as I expected it to be. I mean, it wasn't pleasant by any stretch of the imagination, but I felt strong. I had done this before with Lydia, and I knew I could do it now.
I went into the office, turned on the fan to create a white noise barrier and tried to focus elsewhere. Derek laid in bed entertaining himself by perusing things on his phone. We waited.
His cries ebbed and flowed as he worked to calm himself down. By 12:46 a.m. he was asleep.
So far he's not had another problem. Knock on wood.

Celebration

Nine months is always an interesting milestone. He's been living in this world longer now than he did in utero. He is such a light in our lives. We feel so incredibly blessed to have Connor in our family!

Grandparent party: birthday part 2

Since we divided Lydia's birthday celebrations into a friend portion and a family portion, she's been calling the latter the "Grandparent Birthday Party" for days. We were so grateful to have our families around on Saturday night to celebrate 4 years of our little girl.

We went swimming in St. George Grandma's pool and had a hot dog cookout and then opened presents. Unfortunately, Derek's dad was quite ill and not able to be there but Lydia was more than happy to pose for pictures for him on the gift he picked out: Her first 2 wheeled bike with princesses on it! She jumped right out of the pool and started riding as soon as Grandma wheeled it outside.

Naturally she needed a helmet -- thanks Daddy for picking the Dora the Explorer one. She was so excited!

So stylish!

My parents gave her this beautiful carousel horse as a nod to her absolute love for the carousel. She keeps looking over at it and saying, "my horse is so beautiful!" I hope it represents something sentimental to her one day about her childhood because it already has that kind of meaning to me.

Her very first Barbie doll. Holy cow! Are we already to this stage? I love it.

Connor got in on the action as best he could.

Lydia and Mommy. I love this little girl!!!
Not really sure why we're both wearing our reunion shirts here, don't be confused. We are not at the reunion, we just love the shirts :)

Great-Grandma Grady even brought Connor a gift. So thoughtful!
Thanks to everyone who spoils this little girl rotten! We love you!

All aboard the Dinosaur Train!

Even though Lydia's birthday isn't until Tuesday (Aug. 6) we have been in full party mode all weekend.

It started with a fabulous birthday party, courtesy of Derek and me. That's right -- we'll take the parents of the year trophy right over here, thank you very much.

For those of you not living in a world steeped in PBS Kids shows, you might be unfamiliar with "Dinosaur Train." Feel free to acquaint yourself here.

To be honest, I'm not that familiar either. Lydia has seen the show mainly at her Grandma Larson's house, and on the iPad here at home. But when we started thinking about what kind of theme party to do, it all came together flawlessly. Well, not flawlessly, but they're 4-year-olds, so they couldn't tell :)

We played ring around the rosies, London Bridge, hot lava rock (hot potato), find Buddy in the egg (Buddy is a dinosaur train character) and a memory party game while we waited for everyone to arrive. Then, our train conductor (Derek) punched each child's ticket and we climbed on board the Dinosaur Train assembled in our hallway.

The train's first stop was at the pin the head on the dinosaur game. Then, we took the train into the great outdoors to dig for dinosaurs in the dirt. The kids loved it, even though it was insanely hot.

Back inside for presents and cake and ice cream. Then, thanks to a bit of a timing situation caused by me telling the parents to come back after 90 minutes instead of 60-75 (see, the party wasn't totally perfect like I keep pretending it was) we watched an episode of Dinosaur Train and blew bubbles outside. Overall, however, for our first "friend party" it was a raging success :)

Lydia loved the train cake with dinosaurs all over it.

Happy Birthday sweetie!

Derek and his "co-conductor" Connor.

American pride

I love the Fourth of July! It's one of my favorite holidays and this year was wonderful yet again -- even if it wasn't exactly what we expected.

We'd spent the days preceding the holiday in Cedar City enjoying the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Six plays in three days -- all on work assignment. It's one of my favorite things about my job.

Derek played the heroic role of traveling back and forth between St. George and Cedar City to shuffle kids while I did interviews and attended events related to the festival. He was rewarded by joining me for five of the six plays. I'm so grateful that I married a guy who enjoys a cultured theatrical experience as much as I do.

In the midst of all this shuffling and work, our air conditioning was out at our house, so Derek was also dealing with that. Ugh! Eight days later, after the highest temps of any year that I can recall (115) we had AC again.

We were fortunate to be in Cedar City while my Grandma Petty was in town and were able to celebrate her birthday with her on July 3.

Wilma Petty turning 82

Connor enjoyed his first puffs while we were in Cedar.

We hit the parade on the morning of July 4th, then headed to the park for the games and food afterward, followed by a cookout at my parent's house. Later we drove out to view the city fireworks, then lit our own sparklers in the circle in front of the house -- just like when I was a child. It was a great day!

Four generations on the Fourth of July

Lydia insisted on trying the climbing wall. I had no idea she would be brave enough, or even interested in such an activity but she did fantastic! I was quite proud, considering my first attempt at rock climbing came well into my adult life and I didn't really love it.

Lydia opted to watch the fireworks from the warmth of the back of the car. She kept telling us how cold she was. Such a St. George girl.

Happy birthday America!

Grady Reunion

It's strange to think my family is now at the stage that we have to schedule an official reunion to pull us all together, but with two siblings in Texas and one approaching the time when he'll be leaving to further his schooling who-knows-where, these things have to be official.

I'm really glad we did it.

We started out by flying to Dallas Ft. Worth -- an experience that was a first for Connor and for my sister-in-law Leslie Ann. Remarkably, everyone did extremely well.

Connor and Leslie Ann -- flying newbies.

Derek had a terrible cold/various other illnesses during the trip, hence the surgical mask.

No matter how good they are, the trip eventually gets a little long.

Once we were settled into our respective homes-away-from-home (my family at Karen's, Brian and Leslie Ann and my parents at Kevin's) we had a couple of days of pre-reunion fun.

We visited the Perot Museum of Nature and Science -- a fantastic hands-on experience.

Grandpa Grady showed them his stuff on the drums, then Lydia tried her hand at it.

These two cuties... they were two peas in a pod the whole week.

Lydia's favorite "dance" move. It was so funny because she was standing there doing this move and a bunch of kids came over and started doing it too. It's like they thought that's what you were supposed to do at this portion of the museum. Ah, my daughter, the trend setter.

Relaxing at Kevin and Leslie's house.

While staying at Karen's, Connor had his first bath in the grownup's bathtub. He did great!

Watching Dylan's basketball game with Kate the cheerleader and Lydia.

Let the festivities begin!

On Sunday it was time to travel to the Talako Lodge in Broken Bow, Oklahoma for a week of Grady family fun. The lodge was awesome! Plenty of space for 10 adults and seven children under the age of 7. It had three levels, a fabulous great room, lots of beds, a playground, hot tub, game tables downstairs and a huge wrap around porch. Thanks to Kevin and Leslie for booking something so great.

My view of Connor in the car during the three hour drive to Broken Bow. He is so sweet!

Because it was Father's Day and also Karen's birthday, Sunday evening was a celebration night. Plus, Mom and Dad surprised us with family reunion T-shirts. So fun!

Derek was thrilled with the IRN BRU soda I had shipped in as part of his Father's Day gift.

Karen opening all her gifts.

Another bath time first: Bathing the kids together. Man, that saves a lot of time!

After enjoying a fabulous rainstorm Sunday night and Monday morning, we ventured out to ride a nearby children's train. Unfortunately, it was closed, so we sought entertainment in a nearby park and caught the train another day.

All aboard!
On Tuesday we caught the train in the morning. Later in the day we went swimming in the lake. That night after tucking the kids in bed, the girls enjoyed a fun Christmas craft with my mom.

The craft turned out super cute.

Riding in style! Grandpa's new van was a hit with the grandkids.

Wednesday on wheels
We spent the bulk of the day Wednesday on some private property where they rent ATVs. Although Derek and I are usually kind of take-it-or-leave-it sort of people on ATV rides, I had a great time blazing a trail with Mike Sharp as my guide. Lydia had her first ride, and so did my Mom and Dad. I couldn't believe all the freedom the place gave us -- basically turning us loose with the four-wheelers. Plus there was a playground for the kids and a small air-conditioned lounge where poor Derek (still quite sick) spent much of the time with Connor.

Since these two were both luke-warm/cold on the idea of ATVs when we were kids, this is a sight I never thought I'd see.

Mike, thanks for the ride!

Totally hot and sweaty, but never too hot for a hug.

I planned a treasure hunt for the kids. Naturally, the treasure had to be "buried" in the most popular vehicle -- Grandpa's "van car."

Quite a few but the peanut butter cup s'mores were worth it.

Boating baby!
Friday we rented a boat for half the day and took in the beauty of the lake. Getting to that part was quite a feat, however. If I hadn't witnessed it myself, I don't think I would have believed just how insanely difficult it was to coordinate everyone's boating and childcare needs, all while making it possible for everyone to ski/tube/ride how much they wanted and not leaving any one person with all the childcare responsibilities. In the end it was Leslie Ann who put together a schedule that met everyone's needs and the day went flawlessly.

The schedule.
Yes, it was totally worth a photo -- plus I needed to have it in my phone so I didn't miss my drop off or pick up times.

Kevin and Mike shared most of the driving responsibilities and did a great job.

Loving the swim time!
