No handcarts, please

Apparently, I'd make a terrible pioneer.
At least that's what my husband said today.
OK, he didn't use the word "terrible" but as I look at him settled on the couch with his laptop, iPad and cell phone nearby, I can't help wondering if we would both struggle in the pioneering department. Especially if the destination were anywhere hot.
Such as in St. George.

Today we're putting our pioneer spirit to the test. Afterall, this is the thermostat in our home.

And that was taken around 9:3o tonight when all the windows were open and the fans going full speed.
Yep, our air conditioner is on hiatus.
Of course it would decide to take a break on a Friday night leading into Saturday when it is impossible to get a repair person to your home.
We didn't know for certain it was broken until midday today when we returned from swimming as a family and the house lacked that certain cool feeling you get when you come in out of the hot sun.
I called someone immediately. It'll be Monday or Tuesday before we can get it fixed.
Excellent.
The worst part is we had already arranged to have a babysitter come watch Lydia tonight while Derek and I headed to ward temple night and then to dinner. So on the one hand it was good for us, we escaped the heat for a couple of hours. But our poor daughter and her babysitter... I was so embarrassed. I seriously don't know what I would have done if I was a teenager called upon to babysit under such conditions.
She was sweet about it.
I generously overpaid and told her it was "hazard pay."
Now all that's left is to try to go to sleep myself... Lots of luck with that. Do you think it's weird that I am contemplating curling up with some packages of frozen vegetables?

Happy day!

Today is a big day. It's my sister's birthday!

Next to Derek, she's my closest friend and I am so glad to have her as my sister!
Rather pathetically, I don't have a better current photo of the two of us. This was St. Patrick's Day this year.

Happy Birthday Kare-bear!

Firewoman in training?

Derek and I are the Cub Scout Den Leaders for our ward/neighborhood Wolf Pack. For those not familiar with the world of Cub Scouts, that means we work with the 8-year-olds.
Although this is not an assignment I ever imagined having (I'm still not sure I know what to say to 8-year-old boys), it's actually been a lot of fun. It's been great to work with Derek in this kind of capacity and the boys are enthusiastic, fun-loving boys.
Lydia enjoys it too because since both Derek and I are involved, she is our unofficial assistant and accompanies us on all the activities. Such as today when we toured the fire station.
We are fortunate to have a volunteer fire fighter in our ward who took the boys on a tour of the station and let them sit in the engine, try on the uniform, the works. I had never toured a fire station myself, so I found it fascinating. Even Lydia got to try her hands at the wheel. She loved being part of the group.

Memorial Day

I'm a little behind but we had a great time for Memorial Day weekend.
Taking advantage of Derek's parent's pool while they were on vacation, we invited some new friends from our ward for a cookout and barbecue. It was a great kick off to the summer!

Derek at the grill

Lydia in double floaties. We bought this life vest for her and it was hilarious seeing her bob around like a cork in the water. I was holding onto her the whole time, of course, but she seemed pleased with her new "independence" in the water. Maybe a little too excited about it...

I love my girl!

I don't know why she looks so sad in this picture. She was quite happy that day, but for some reason I caught her in a rather contemplative moment in her high chair. I thought it was adorable.
